The church of Mikulašova was re-consecrated on 22nd October 2005. A packed church took part in the 3 hour service conducted by Greek Catholic Bishop Babjak of the Presov diocese. Loud speakers relayed the service to the large crowds that had gathered outside. The freshly cut wooden colour and texture of the exterior is a sight that is rarely seen. The wood will soon darken like the other wooden churches in the region.

Participants in the "Evache" project are introduced to the archaeological site at Skriduklaustur, by Steinunn Kristjansdottir (right).

The group will recontruct the ground plan of the excavated part of the monastary in its original position, with help from local farmers who understand how to construct walls in turf and stone.  Hjalti Jonasson and Pall Þorisson were born and raised in turf houses in the valley.

Other examples of turf buildings have been visited in several areas in East Iceland, including a small church at Geirsstadir and a house at Galtastadir fram.  These sites show the way that the stone and turf where built up and drift wood used to support the roof and create the gables.

The main purpose of the trip ...   more »
